Wow, they are so anti-capitalistic and anti-corporate that they played at a festival sponsored by PepsiCo

I don't uphold anything "passionately", I'm just making a point. Anyway, the solution would probably be to acknowledge this globally and stop treating artists like moral beacons. They're merely entertainers and, in the words of Ricky Gervais, are not in a position to lecture the public about anything, because they know nothing about the real world. How about that for a solution?

Disagree with your solution and I think you're misunderstanding the meaning behind that Gervais' quote. It's important not to conflate a celebrity speaking out about poverty with a film (art) that may or may not make a political statement. Art coexists with capitalism, and I'm very glad that's the case. If you don't want to listen to musicians that speak about left-wing ideals and make money, which is inevitable, then I guess that's your prerogative. I'm pretty sure you're just being contrarian at this point though, so we'll leave it there.

Please explain what is the meaning behind the Gervais' quote, because I think it's self-explanatory and fits perfectly when discussing the hypocrisy and the holier-than-thou attitude of actors, musicians and alike. Also, I have no problem with anyone making money, obviously contrary to the members of Yard Act. Unless, of course, they are the ones who earn with the help of the corporate world they preach against.

artists still gotta eat, especially in a country like the UK that doesn't support artists nor traditional live venues at all.

You seem to hardly grasp the context that has been created by a conservative governement cutting helps aimed at artists for the past decade, by the gentrification of independent live venues, by LiveNation and AEG taking over high-scale "indie" festivals, by a global pandemic, and of course by an idiotic geopolitical measure that makes it more expensive for British artists to play overseas. Unless you would like to read my 150-page thesis on the subject? Free-will is an illusion, especially in global crisis times. This will be my last shout on the subject since I have a life outside the internet. However, before pointing our fingers at musicians as a form of intellectual wanking, we should keep in mind that it is a very precarious time to be an artist, and that we would likely act the same way (or do even worse) if we were put in the same situation.

"We would likely act the same way (or do even worse) if we were put in the same situation" - well, not at all. This is a fallacy that's supposed to justify anyone that sold out. This is the same shitty arguments some historians made when discussing nazism ("They were only soldiers, you would do the same for your country", blah blah blah). There are some artists who never did that though, just calling it quits instead. Mark Hollis immediately comes to mind. You may think you and your favourites have no free will but please do not project that theory onto other people. And with all due respect, I have better things to do than reading 150-page thesis on the first world problems.

poor people tend to be very pro-capitalist, believe it or not. you have to figure out a way to work the system that was made to disadvantage you. it sucks, but that's how it works. even the most anti-capitalist of us sometimes have to play into it to survive. doesn't make us hypocrites, just makes us victims of the system. if i could, i'd say fuck the man and quit my job. but then i'd probably become homeless and starve to death. artists may have a slight more advantage than us but that doesn't mean they have it peachy keen. they have to make a living just like you and me. i'm poor myself and it sucks major balls, but like they always say: there is no ethical consumption under capitalism!
