Part of this song was written by a postman who helped Dobbins complete the lyrics. His name was Freddie Gorman and his mail route included Brewster public housing where members of The Supremes lived. Gorman also sang with Motown group The Originals. He passed away in 2006. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=25

You'd have a job to catch my postman. He creeps up at strange hours and runs. Was this the original recording of Mr Postman? Heard quite a few versions. never knew which came first.

Lots of covers of this song...what they miss? This one is about as simple R&B as you can get. Listen to the call and response....Gospel influence you won't find in the other covers. You find out what you miss when you hear the slicker versions...

Communications have evolved to the point of being connected 24/7. The card or letter are a waste of time...Can the Post Office be saved? Does it need to?

This was #1 US hit for The Carpenters, who covered this on their 1975 album Horizon. It was their biggest hit ever worldwide, reaching # 1 in the US, Australia, Germany, Japan and several other countries, as well as reaching # 2 in the UK and Canada. It featured Karen Carpenter on drums and a guitar solo by Tony Peluso http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=25 (Ed. Note: And, of course there's the Beatles version....)
