The Great African-American Classical Art-Form Sonny Rollins; The Bridge Maestro tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins' first recording after ending a surprising three-year sabbatical to shed daily on the Williamsburg Bridge to improve his skills. In a pianoless quartet with guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Ben Riley, Rollins explores four standards (including "Without a Song" and "God Bless the Child") plus two fiery originals, highlighted by the title cut. The interplay between Rollins and Hall is consistently impressive, definitely a classic session and a very successful comeback. Listening to the Classic Records 4 single-sided LP 45 RPM reissue of this and it sounds incredible. Absolutely incredible. This isn't my favorite Sonny Rollins album but it's damn good. I usually prefer Rollins in a trio but I love this particular band. The inimitable Jim Hall on guitar, as Jack_A_Lynn said great double bass from Cranshaw and Ben Riley does nice work behind the drumkit. I always thought Riley was a bit underappreciated; I've enjoyed his work with Monk and Ahmad Jamal over the years. Anyway, yeah, this was a great return to form for Newk after his hiatus.

Some of the pieces have a weird structure, but the whole album is simply awesome... and I didn't expexct Bob Cranshaw is such a terrific double-bass player!
