Facilmente a banda que mais escutei na adolescência, volta e meia escuto novamente e sempre me dá uma nostalgia reconfortante.

Have they gone back to the roots? Haven't followed them after Unia as I found that rather boring and only listen to the first 4 albums every now and then. But I was curious so I gave the new stuff a listen - sounds very oldschool. I like! Not too much into this kind of music anymore but I feel nostalgic listening to it. :)

Well, shit. I definitely wasn't ready for Sonata Arctica firing on all cylinders after 20 years. Welcome back!

There is something ironic about the fact that a band that has created Finnish power metal albums so classic and archetypal in a good way wants to get away from this genre so badly.

Many bands do the same thing and I can not help but wonder if they are really that stupid.

I don't see anything wrong with that if the musicians sincerely want to play something different and they do it better. I'm not talking about guys, just in general. But in this case, it's incredibly sad for me to lose the band, on whose music both I myself and my ideas about the ideal power metal grew up.

HEFESTYUMETAL
The problem is they quit doing something they do best and turn to doing something that nobody likes and that is far worse. Bands always explain this as their growth and evolution as a band but to me that is devolution. There is also problem with audience especially younger ones who consume it without knowing their previous work and they legitimize bands bad decisions because they bring them money.

Well, at least they haven't gone that far in terms of aesthetics. I know guys who used to play the ultimate German folk metal with a melodic death feel, but now they've turned into melodic metalcore or even post-hardcore lol.

I just want to appreciate the fact that this band is responsible for adding the phrase "obligatory wolf song" to the list of things I've uttered in real life

This band would mean nothing for me 13 years ago if I haven't found many of their famous songs on youtube featuring a snowy wolf anime that I still don't have a clue which one is.

I was revisiting their catalog since I stopped listening to them after Reckoning Night. First three albums are what the fans call "classic SA", with their fast paced power metal songs sang with that high pitched voice. It's cool, but gets kinda boring with time (even Tony Kakko can't sing like that anymore). Reckoning Night, Unia and The Days Of Grays bring something else to the table, they are more melodic with some progressive songs and better arrengements as well. After that, it only goes downhill and are not worth commenting, but the question remains: how could a band suck so bad after two strong phases?

Well, you're right and I only can explain it with the "everything sucks today"-problem. I saw them live about 15 years ago and I couldn't believe this was the same band I loved. And in my opinion they were never as good as in their beginnings but maybe they only changed and we are just the same...

Those first three albums are fun to revisit if you take a long break from them; the youthful energy is pretty infectious and the melodies hold up (a SA strong point). Albums after TDoG also contain some gems here and there, but totally agree that they dropped off hard with overall consistency and quality around that point. Bands get tired, bandmate dynamics change, etc.

The Ninth Hour has some tinny mastering which drags it down but otherwise I like it a lot.

I think that there is a very well planned strategy. They do their next album worse than the previous one so when you listen to the penultimate album you think is good by comparing it to the new one. I am liking now The Ninth Hour (and I hate it when it was released, as I compared it to Pariah's Child), Talviyö is so fucking lame. Maybe with a new album worse than Talviyö I will start liking Talviyö...

I just came to the realization that Don't Say A Word got to be the best Sonata Arctica track. The main riff is so fucking catchy I can't even describe it. Whenever I think about a Sonata Arctica track, it's always Don't Say A Word and the main riff. So good. Also, the vocals and the lyrics, this Tony Kakko at his best, fucking incredible.

Few understands what I am talking about, but I don't give a fuck about people that don't understand me because I have a right to be heard, to be seen, to be loved, to be free and to be everything I need to be me, to be safe, to believe In something. I also have a right to my own opinion!

I saw them live too the other night. I also thought something felt off about their performance, but I haven't listened to Sonata much since The Days of Grays, so I figured I was the one in the wrong.

As a big fan of The Ninth Hour, I agree Talviyo is a bit disappointing BUT it's also something of a grower. It shares a sound palette with The Ninth Hour, which shares a sound palette with The Days of Grays, and I love that because it is my favorite version of SA. BUT... aside from generally weaker songwriting, Talviyo has the distinction of also being less sonically diverse than either of those albums, so by the back end it begins to feel tired. I'd probably drop it marginally ahead of Stones and far ahead of Pariah's Child in the bottom half of their discography.

Serious question, why is the instrumental on Talviyö called 'Ismo's Got Good Reactions' and not Revontulet pt. 2? It would only make sense when many other tracks on the album reminisce of older tracks. I know, the Instrumental has a funny meaning in Finnish that's why. Salatut Elämät the long running TV-series. But was the reference really necessary.. Overall the album has grown on me quote a bit, except Demon's Cage. That I cannot get over ever. Oh well the song is good but the lyrics are ....... abysmal..

So just a quick thought, on Pariah's Child we had tracks like Cloud Factory and Half a Marathon Man and even X Marks the Spot, which seemed kind of funny and even like joke songs at the time but compared to the tracks on the new album those tracks seen like the best ones Sonata has ever written (well those tracks always were solid but). The jokes and song writing on the new album.. I'd so much love to go back to Pariah's Child days, at least that album was 10/10 power metal and not this AOR .... we have now.

"Message From the Sun", "Storm the Armada" and the instrumental track "Ismo's Got Good Reactors" (whatever the fuck that means) are pretty good songs, imo. I find myself bored with the rest of the album, however, and I just straight up hate "Cold". Will I give it a few more listens to see if it grows? Probably, but on first listen, it just might be my least favorite SA album.

Tony just can't do wrong! Keeps your expectations at a reasonable level by releasing the singles and then smacks you in the face with this amazing sound on the album as a whole! I hope this guy never stops writing music.

I especially liked Ismo's Got Good Reactors. It reminds me of Silence's album structure with Revontulet. Absolutely adore Tony's vocals but I've been waiting for an instrumental for some time now =D

Yes really. I haven't been listening to Sonata Arctica for the guitars ever since Jani is no longer part of the band. And they are not what makes the album's after that great anyways. I was worried about the production of this one but once you get the songs in CD quality, there is loads of amazing sounds and catchy melodies to be found here. I prefer this less guitar oriented approach instead of getting a lot of "Rise A Night" kind of songs. If you're looking for awesome guitar sound, you have been looking in the wrong place for quite over a decade now. There are many other bands that perform much better these days in that regard

I like the songs. This album is far better than The 9th Hour (probably the worst in the band's history), it has a plenty of catchy melodies and as great keyboard arrangements as ever. But those guitars are just driving me mad. I don't search for awesome sound here, just decent one would be good.

I just read a review of the album and was somewhat relieved. Apparently the album has some very heavy and experimental tracks, you will be surprised. For some reason they just decided to release the two most radio-friendly tracks as singles. However, in the review they said that the album has similar 'soundsphere' as The Ninth Hour. I'm actually crossing my fingers and praying this doesn't mean it also has the terrible mix and compressed sound as the previous album, which was barely listenable (check Rise a Night for reference). It almost felt like they sent an incomplete mix to mastering or the proper mix got lost somewhere. It's really weird though, as the Pariah's Child album did not have this mixing issue and it doesn't sound compressed at all. Yet it was mixed and mastered by the same people as The Ninth Hour. But if only we could go back to the Tico-Tico days and always have a quality mix/master on Sonata's albums. Albums like Unia, The Days of Grays and Stones Grow Her Name etc.

The most recent single(as of this post) is simply awful. I really think it's about time these guys just give it up. They haven't made anything of note over this whole decade.
