This is the song that has always made me hold onto The Division Bell as a great work

"I thought of you and the years and all the sadness fell away from me [...] And did you know? I never thought that you'd lose that light in your eyes..." There's something so profoundly touching, melancholic yet warm, affectionate about Division Bell and this song as well as 'Lost For Words'. It's transcendental...I never perceived or felt those as derision, but rather a sort of requiem, a teary-eyed look into the past with nostalgia and tenderness. There's no bitterness, no contempt or spite in David's (Polly's I know, but the feelings are David's) lyrics, playing and singing, but a lament and yearning in a sense, and fondness in the end...

The first verse is for Syd, the golden boy; the second is for Roger Waters who was very cruel to his members while he was in the lead. This song is very beautiful and perfectly constructed. David Gilmour proved to be also a genius along with Richard Wright. A sound show. The Division Bell, the entire album is distinguished by being dense and with a peculiar power to ambientize those who stop to listen to it, manages to be melancholy without being corny; to be sad, without being depressed; dreamlike without being utopian and manages to be reflective without being suggestive. Among the tracks, "Poles Apart" is enigmatic, in addition to the brilliant lyrics about "Sid" and "Waters", a song, by the way underrated, that manages to be beautiful from the beginning, under Gilmour's strumming on the guitar and his voice of pillow, in the middle, in the second minute, with the weight of Wright's insane and contemplative interlude, until the dramatic and idiocratic end, typical of the Floyds.

I don't think I'll know a person that will mean as much as this song/album does to me

This is one of the most emotionally cathartic songs I've ever heard. That final solo always gets me.

Doesn't sound like a usual Floyd song. Kind of sounds like Dave Matthews Band or Grateful Dead. Very jam band esque.
