Yup, already in "Bedtime Stories" you can hear trip-hop vibes, thx to Nellee Hooper (who produced most of the awesome artists back then, from Massive Attack to Sneaker Pimps)... Btw Sneaker Pimps... There was a time back in the 90s when Madonna was looking out for artists to work with and reinvent herself and she wanted Sneaker Pimps, but they turned down. I dunno what exact year that was but Chris Corner told that story from time to time.

I know Sneaker Pimps, I've had my share of "6 Underground" back in the day. What I didn't know was that Madonna wanted to make music with them. Hence why I mentioned Fatboy Slim, as I heard that story over and over again on the radio, at the time. I thought William Orbit produced "Ray of Light"? But you mentioned Nellee Hooper... Anyway, your comment about Madonna blocking her own path while trying to come across as still young was, probably, the wisest thing I've read in quite some time. Pretty spot-on! What's wrong in ageing gracefully and accepting the years that you carry on your body and your soul? She lived for a couple of years, or so, in my country, and "Madame X" is, allegedly, heavily influenced by that (at least that Madame X Tour photo that's featured in her website I can guarantee that it is). People around here would be annoyed by her celebrity quirks. But I think she's gone, now. One of her sons is still here, I think. I'm totally rambling, now, my apologies.

William Orbit did produce "Ray of Light", but before that Nellee Hooper produced "Bedtime Stories", which I mentioned bc of you saying that this very song here is so Massive Attack-y :) Quote: "In order to move into a more mainstream sound, Madonna collaborated with Dallas Austin, Babyface, Dave "Jam" Hall and Nellee Hooper, wanting to soften her image following the critical and commercial backlash she faced after releasing sexually explicit projects in the previous two years, notably the Erotica album and the Sex book." Nellee Hooper had a huge influence on her change in sound/style, which obviously then led to "Ray of Light" sounding so "European" and TripHop-y. Also fascinating regarding softening her image bc of her sexually explicit stuff from before: When you watch the "Bad Girl" video (damn what a masterpiece) and listen to the lyrics, it's like she has her promiscuous character die for leading the "degenerate" life she demonstrated so much before.

And then a new spiritual, wholesome Madonna was reborn on "Ray of Light". Thx, I just think it's obvious that Madonna was always a performer of pure emotions (which you can for example hear in "Bad Girl"), she gotta go deep to shine, but all this superficial forced youthful stuff kills all that what makes Madonna Madonna. I can understand why she struggles with ageing. I remember her saying in an interview that she's still 24 inside and that it's confusing. Some people just stay young on the inside forever and then suddenly the outside doesn't match anymore and they don't recognize themselves in the mirror no more. I don't think it's intentional, it's just hard to cope bc time is running so fast. I remember when I was 16 not so long ago and now suddenly I'm 20 years older, it happened so quickly, so I can understand. What country are you from? To be honest I don't even wanna listen to the new album in a whole when it's released, I just have no urge.
