Madonna is the debut studio album by American singer Madonna, released on July 27, 1983, via Sire Records.
The album has an upbeat synthetic disco sound, using new technology of the time, including the Linn drum machine, Moog bass and Oberheim OB-X synthesizer. She sang in a bright, girlish timbre, with lyrics about love and relationships. To promote the album, Madonna performed one-off gigs in clubs and on television in the United States and United Kingdom throughout 1983 and 1984, followed by The Virgin Tour in 1985.
The album was re-released in 1985 for the European market and re-packaged as Madonna - The First Album. In 2001, Warner Bros. released a remastered version with two bonus remix tracks. The RIAA certified it Gold on May 31, 1984 & 5.00× Multi Platinum on 3 October 2000, recognizing five million shipments throughout the United States. Worldwide, the album has sold at least eight million copies.
