Biography

Joost Klein, also known as just Joost, is a Dutch musician born in 1997, hailing from the province of Friesland. He started his career in 2010 on YouTube under the name EenhoornJoost (lit. UnicornJoost), and has been in the music industry since 2016 under the label TopNotch, where he left in 2018 to set up his own record label called Albino Records.

When Joost was 12, his father died of cancer. Merely a year later, his mother died of cardiac arrest.

He's most known for his song Europapa, which was the Dutch Eurovision entry in 2024. Infamously, due to "an incident" the entry was disqualified and all references to it where avoided and removed in the finals of that year. According to the AVROTROS (who handles the Dutch Eurovision entries) Joost was recorded by a female camera operator against his will immediately following his semi-final performance. AVROTROS claims that she continued to film "against clearly made agreements". The camera operator alleges that Joost had reacted to the recording by making a "threatening movement" toward her. The disqualification stirred commotion as many people and the AVROTROS considered the disqualification too heavy and disproportionate, and as a result Joost's social media's grew exponentially in followers while the EBU's and other related social media accounts and posts where flooded with reactions containing the hashtags #JusticeForJoost and #Joostice (a combination of Joost and Justice). In protest against the disqualification of Joost, the Dutch refused to give out points during the finals. The song Europapa itself also became widely popular, already being a fan favourite and now boosted with popularity due to the commotion around it, and was the first song of the artist to reach the Dutch Single Top 100.
