“Carolina” is the third track of Harry Styles' debut solo album. It was first performed on May 9, 2017, on The Today Show, but the studio version was not officially released until May 12, along with the rest of the album.
The song is thought to be inspired by a fan named Townes, as well as (to a lesser extent) cocaine, with the title specifically being a reference to Johnny Cash’s “Cocaine Carolina”.
The track is Harry’s father’s favorite song on the album.
In an interview on BBC Radio 1, Harry stated:
"‘Carolina’ was the last song that I wrote for the album. It was kinda what felt like it finished it off. We had a week or two weeks, and it felt like we were in a funk. I wrote this and it felt like the bit of fun it was missing. It’s about a specific person, and they know it’s about them now. It’s potentially about someone from Carolina."
“Carolina” is certified Gold by the RIAA.
