he's been doing some studio work for BAMBARA, and i presume he's also involved with These New Puritans to-be-announced new record. he worked with TNP on their latest two records -- both absolutely excellent and definitely something to check out if you're into Graham's work. when it comes to recent incarnations of the classic "first wave" post-rock of Bark Psychosis, Talk Talk, and the likes, a record like Field Of Reeds is the arguably the closest you'll get to that original sound

he surely creates, luckily! i'd keep an eye out for future releases by BAMBRA and These New Puritans.

for some reason i find bark psychosis such a cute name for a band, it reminds me of skinnny puppy, the cutest band name, i mean... a skinny puppy with a bark psychosis... cool you know? with that out of the way, Hex is such a subtle masterpiece, Absent Friend alone is powerful enough in the most delicate way; a slow burn of a band

Can somebody rec me some spacious, meditative, jazzy post-rock like Codename: Dustsucker or Talk Talk's Laughing Stock? (It probably helps that both of these had Lee Harris on drums haha)

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but you might enjoy early Low, particularly "The Curtain Hits the Cast" or Codeine "Frigid Stars".

I'm British, I remember when my friend got his first car, I had recently discovered Bark and we went on a late night drive in deep winter and we stopped off at this river that we beginning to flood and overflow. And all I could and can think of is Bark Psychosis. I haven't seen him in years and I've moved far away but I still remember that scene.

there are some magical moments in our lives that we never forget and it's even better when it's completed with good music. i sometimes do late night walks with bark on my headphones, the scene around changes instantly.

i was listening to absent friends once when walking back from the lake to my dorm. it was dusk, freezing, and the only light they had were from the streetlights. that was definitely one of the best soundtrack'd scenes of my life.

Ridiculous comment. As for Talk Talk they started out as a derivative synth-pop band.

what's up with all the Talk Talk comparisons? sure they had some influence on Bark Psychosis, but Hex is entirely a beast of its own, completely different aesthetically and emotionally from anything that Mark Hollis ever put out. what you're saying is like saying that Sgt Pepper is "ridiculously derivative" because the Beatles were influenced by Beach Boys at the time. honestly, if you can't recognise Hex for the masterpiece that it is, it's nothing but your own loss. as much as I respect Mark Hollis and late Talk Talk, their music still doesn't touch me nearly as much as Bark Psychosis do.

I feel like they're similar only in the most superficial aspects - bewildering, loose song structures, abrupt changes in tone, style and volume, heavy jazz influence, the use of non-rock instruments, atmospheric drones. Sure. All of that is there. But that's all surface. The vibe that Bark Psychosis started to develop over their singles, and especially on Hex, is like nothing else, not even Talk Talk. It took me a decade to appreciate what it was trying to do. Talk Talk made almost overwhelmingly beautiful, heartfelt music. People that come to Hex expecting that are setting themselves up for disappointment. Hex is mysterious. It's not emotionally open, it lurks in the shadows and casts a strange spell. It's a magical album.

interesting how you say that it took you a decade to appreciate Hex - for me it was the reverse because it's been 4 years before i started to recognise Laughing Stock for the masterpiece that it is, but Hex immediately spoke to me the first time I listened to it when I was 13. didn't even have to think about it, it just made sense 100% emotionally

This band is the best discovery I made past year. Amazing atmosphere, original and creative.

I think Dustsucker is a grower, this album needs more love from me. Hex is a different story, I've fallen in love on the first listen.

Yes it is. Modern post-rock is a lot different. Back then it was something new and needed to be labeled as a genre.

You hate yourself for listening to them or not listening at all? I guess the second one :)

does anybody know albums that are at least somehow similar to Hex or Codename? obviously i've already heard Talk Talk and Labradford, but my nocturnal soul wants more... by the way, SCUM is sublime.

Rain Tree Crow's self-titled record is comparable in terms of sounds and atmosphere, definitely worth a listen.

By the way, I've heard rumours that Graham is currently working on a remaster of 'Scum'. Promising stuff.

thanks for the recommendation, i'll check it out sometime. that bastard better be working on a third Bark Psychosis album! Scum is already perfect enough as it is.

thanks for reminding me of TFC, i recall rather enjoying the s/t some 2-3 years ago but for some reason forgot about it. what about Zelienople, i just recently listened to Ink by them and wasn't too impressed although it was a rather nice sleep aid.
