"Art Blakey was a lot of things during his 71 years: ladies’ man, gourmet, philosopher, teacher, mentor, bigamist, drug addict, and a father of ten children. But, above all else, he was a consummate musician whose raison d’être was spreading the jazz gospel. He played the drums with verve and a propulsive sense of swing combined with unremitting power, and led his band with an avuncular authority, inspiring those playing with him to up their game and play harder, louder, and with more creative fire. Besides his many recordings with The Jazz Messengers, Blakey left behind many fine solo albums. His, then, is a rich and storied musical legacy that continues to inspire new generations of listeners and musicians. For the road-hardened Blakey, jazz was more than just music, it was a way of life. And it possessed the power to cleanse, heal and uplift. Or, as he once famously said: “Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life.” - Charles Waring

I can't believe the cover designer for At The Cafe Bohemia didn't realize that having the letters "NGERS" boldened and front and center wasn't exactly a good idea.....

Weirdly breaking up the band's name across two lines is basically a trademark of Jazz Messengers albums.

It was so cool to see Moanin' as one of the options for the Christmas party in Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Give the song Pisces a try, I've always found it to be one of their most relaxing pieces

I thought At the Cafe Bohemia Volume 1 was pretty underwhelming but Volume 2 stood out to me a lot more. Weird, because they're both from the same concert.

my favorite lineup is still the original group w/ Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham.

Kids on the Slope introduced me to this masterpiece :) [9] and that's a good thing, because I never would of known about this amazing artist otherwise.

"really guys? an anime made you listen to Art Blakey?" I'm not sure why that's a problem.

I feel totally embarrassed by the fact I was introduced to the Jazz Messengers by an anime, but I feel damn good to listen to them. Thank you Sakamichi no Apollon!

It's actually nice to see people are getting more interested in this group. They really were at the top of their game.

The track Children of The Night on the Mosaic album from '61 is incredible, Wayne Shorter is something else.
